Responsive web design

Responsive websites by Brisbane web designers

What is responsive web design?

By now you've probably heard the term 'responsive web design' or 'mobile-friendly website' flying around and that's why you're here.

Originally coined in 2010 by web design pioneer Ethan Marcotte (source: alistapart.com), responsive web design can be best explained like so:

A responsive web design adapts the content, images and video of your website to fit the screen size of the device it's being viewed on, including computers and mobile devices like tablets and mobile phones. Responsive websites make it easier for customers to read content and find the services or products they need, leading to happier customers and more enquiries.

Responsive web design grew out of a need for cost-effective mobile-friendly websites. In the past, large businesses would build one website for desktop and laptops, and a second website for mobile devices like iPads and iPhones. This approach creates great user experiences, but you need to pay for the design and development of two different websites.

Responsive web design was a god-send for small businesses, blogs and news providers, and small eCommerce stores. It allows the customers to receive a great website experience on their phones or tablet, without costing you extra in development costs.

Why do you need a responsive website?

People use mobile devices to visit websites, a lot.

In April 2016, 41% of website visits by Australians were made from mobile devices (source: Statcounter).

Responsive websites are easier to read and use

Responsive websites scale text, images and video to be the perfect size to view on mobile devices. Users will enjoy reading the content on your website. To optimise your content for the shorter-attention span of users on mobile devices (as opposed to desktop users) you can remove or modify content and images to fit.

48% of mobile shoppers put ease of use as the most important quality of a mobile website they visit (source: MediaPost).

Making your website mobile-friendly means visitors will never need to pinch-to-zoom your website to read tiny text or tap a tiny button. Menus, call to actions and links are all the perfect size for the user to read and tap. Responsive websites will also connect to mobile services like phone and email, so visitors can call or email your business with one tap.

If your website isn't responsive, you're losing potential customers.

Any website that isn't mobile-friendly will have high bounce rates (visitors viewing only one page on your website and leaving). This is because mobile internet users have become accustomed to websites that are optimised for the smaller screens. Unless your business offering is completely unique, most users lack the patience to navigate a non-responsive website, and will simply press the back button. Then they'll find a competitor with a responsive website.

Google penalizes non-responsive websites

In early 2015, Google made the following announcement:

Starting April 21, 2015, Google Search will be expanding its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in Google Search results. (source: Google)

The gist - Make your website responsive.

Don't worry, we can fix it for you.

In our experience, there are two ways to make your mobile-friendly:

  1. Modify your existing website to be responsive, or
  2. Create a brand new website that is responsive out of the box.

1. Modify your existing website

Your website may be old, but it may still look great and perform well. So instead of building a new website from scratch, we can modify your existing website. Without modifying your existing codebase, we create a new CSS document that detects if a visitors is on a mobile device and adjusts content, images and videos to fit the screen. Your website will still pack the same great features, beautiful visual design, and SEO power, but will now be mobile-friendly.

Modifying your existing website takes approximately 7 working days, and follows these steps:

  1. Initial phone or skype consultation to discuss how you want the mobile website to look and feel. Don’t worry, we’ll give our expert advice at this stage.
  2. We create and send you design mockups of how the homepage and each unique inside page will look.
  3. We make a copy of your website and develop your responsive website on our servers.
  4. Once approved, we put your new responsive website live and notify Google so they remove any non-mobile-friendly penalties they have applied.

The time and effort involved for making a website responsive will vary. A large business website or eCommerce store will require a higher budget and time requirement than a small business website.

2. Create a brand new responsive website

Is your website old and tired? Does it perform poorly in search engines or fail to convert visitors to customers?

Then it’s probably time to get a brand new responsive website design.
